Breathtaking Beauties At The 44th Daejeong Awards

The 44th Daejeong Awards (Grand Bell Awards), one of the major movie awards in Korea, was filled with surprises in terms of who or which film won, as well as stunning Korean beauties walking down the red carpet. The video above shows us a glimpse of what took place at the red carpet ceremony, while the snaps below are simply highlights chosen by me.

Major winners include:

Best Film: Family Ties

Best Director: Bong Joon Ho, The Host

Best Actor: Ahn Sung Ki, Radio Star

Best Actress: Kim Ah Joong, 200-Pound Beauty

Best Supporting Actor: Kim Yoon Seok, Tazza: The High Rollers

Best Supporting Actress: Shim Eun Jin, South of The Border

Best New Actor: Ryu Deok Hwan, Like A Virgin

Best New Actress: Jo Yi Jin, South of The Border

Overseas Popularity Award: Jung Ji Hoon (Bi), Kim Tae Hee

Korea (Domestic) Popularity Award: Lee Bum Soo, Kim Ah Joong

Kim Tae-hee, looking absolutely heart-stopping as always. I'm sure you remember her.

Korean pop star Ivy sings with some dude I don't care about.

I think what Ivy's singing here is the 1970s rock-pop song "Maria."

Kim Ah-joong

Kim Ah-joong (above and below, with a dude), won because of her performance in the film 200-pound Beauty. If you haven't seen the film yet, well you should; download the movie on bit torrent for Pete's sake! She's so lovely there I'm running out of superlatives.

Korean Singing Rivals Lee Hyo-lee and Ivy To Face Off In A Free Show

Pop singers Lee Hyo-lee and Ivy have recently been running an amusing gimmick in South Korea -- almost each time one of them performs in some place or show, the other must absolutely be there, too. So now, in an upcoming free event on May 19 and 20 at the Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Seoul, Korea, at a show called 2007 World Wide Invitational, the two are set to face off again.

WWI 2007 is a free event for video gamers and video game fans hosted by Blizzard, the world-famous video game company that developed "StarCraft" and "World of WarCraft."

The large-scale event is expected to draw correspondents from over 100 major foreign news services. Lee Hyo-lee and Ivy have recently been squaring off as guests on various television programs.

The upcoming show has music fans particularly excited since Super Junior, a boy band whose members recently suffered a car accident, and PSY, a rapper who is popular for his bizarre image and comic dance routines, are also scheduled to appear. Tickets can be had from the WWI 2007 website at www.blizzard.co.kr.

Korean Pop Star Ivy "Flaunts" Her Modesty

Korean pop star Ivy, whose songs "Sonata of Temptation" and "If you're Gonna Be Like This" are huge hits in Korea, says her success has been all about modesty.

"I didn't try hard to make myself look beautiful and sexy, I just devoted myself to singing. I think that's the reason for my popularity. Things that go too far tend to turn people off, don't they?"
At a time when it seems as if female singers who substitute sex appeal for talent are being churned out one after the next, Ivy stands apart. If the success of "Sonata of Temptation" is due to its arrangement based on the classical piece "Fur Elise," the popularity of "If You're Gonna Be Like This" proves that the public has begun to recognize her singing skills, rather than underestimate her as one of the many sexy but less talented singers.

Ivy said she still can't believe the enthusiastic response to her songs, although when she released her first album she felt sorry that she drew attention for her image rather than her singing. She has been told that "Sonata" has a powerful force since she first began working on it. "I don't lip-sync except in some unavoidable situations, even though I have to dance while I sing," she said. "I practiced singing everyday on a treadmill for four years when I was training for my debut, and I think that's paying off now."
